Chapter Eleven
By the time weâre done with our early breakfast itâs past six, so Will goes back to his place. Since today is Sunday and my brother is a priest I canât very well skip church, so after I get ready for my big âdateâ with Mike, I go to nine a.m. mass. Luckily, itâs a clear day, so nobody gets soaked during my brotherâs oh so uncomfortable sermon where he asks for money to repair the roof on St. Perpetuaâs.
Poor Sebastian. He looks as if heâs about to pass out while imploring us to open our hearts and wallets so that everyone can stay dry.
My parents are at mass. So are Jim and Travis Fontaine.
Everyone notices that Iâm a bit more dressed up than usual.
âLucy!â Mom says, âYou look wonderful!â Iâm wearing mascara and blush and yes, lipstick. I tossed out half my closet onto my bed trying to decide what to wear for this brunch. Iâve always been a T-shirt and jeans girl. Extra points for comfy sneakers, so anything other than a simple skirt and flats is a challenge for me.
In the end, I selected a flowery dress that I wore to my cousinâs outdoor wedding a few years ago. Itâs nice but not too dressy and paired with a light blue sweater and wedge heels, I donât think Iâll embarrass myself.
Despite that Iâm wearing heels, Travis still towers over me. âYou look nice,â he says with just an edge of something in his voice that makes my insides go all gooey.
No. I refuse to be this weak.
âThanks.â I introduce Travis and his dad to my parents. They all shake hands and make polite small talk.
âSo, Travis, are you a member of Young Catholic Singles?â Mom asks. Geez. The way Mom is pushing this group, itâs like she gets a kickback for every member she recruits.
Travis clears his throat. âNo, maâam, Iâm not. Iâve been pretty busy at work since moving here.â
âWeâve heard,â Dad says, shaking his head. âI have no idea whatâs going on in this town. It used to be Whispering Bay was the safest city in America. Not anymore.â
Travis and I exchange a look. If Dad only knew what was really going on. Even after the events of the past few days I still canât wrap my head around it. According to Agent Billings, this El Tigre could be anywhere. Maybe heâs even here at church. I discreetly watch as people dip their finger into the holy water and make the sign of the cross on their way out the door, but all I see are familiar faces.
âAre you going to the parish hall for coffee and donuts?â Jim asks us.
âGeorge and I never miss the donuts,â says Mom, âBut Lucy needs to go meet her new boyfriend. His name is Mikeâ¦whatâs his last name again? Itâs something Italian. Maybe Travis here can run a background check on him.â
âLucy has a new boyfriend?â Travisâs green eyes glitter with amusement. âIâd be happy to run a background check.
